Lunar New Year 2024
The Lunar New Year, starting February 10th, is centered around removing the bad and the old, and welcoming the new and the good. This Lunar New Year marks The Year of the Dragon.
In Chinese culture, the Dragon is significant in the Chinese zodiac as the fifth animal, representing good luck, honor, strength, and success. This year’s dragon is the Wood Dragon, which focuses on health and well-being.
A large part of the Lunar New Year celebrations revolves around food and eating together at a dinner known as Nian Ye Fan (年夜饭). This is to strengthen family bonds and to honor ancestors. One traditional Chinese cooking method that brings people together is hot pot. This communal eating experience prepares a simmering pot of soup stock in the middle of the table, similar to fondue, and can include everything from meat to seafood, vegetables, and noodles.
Watercress and water spinach are popular staples in hot pot and other traditional Asian recipes, making them the perfect ingredients for your Lunar New Year celebration.
Some traditional lucky foods include noodles, symbolizing longevity, and pork, symbolizing progress – both found in our Asian Noodles with Roast Pork and Watercress. Rice also plays a significant role in the New Year meal, representing prosperity. Bring good fortune into your 2024 with our Shrimp and Water Spinach Stir Fry.
Whether you celebrate with festivals, dancing, or food, we wish you all of the luck in 2024!
