Lunar New Year
2023 – The Year of the Rabbit
Sunday, January 22, starts the 2023 Lunar New Year and will culminate with a lantern festival on February 5, 2023. At B&W, we encourage you to enjoy the Lunar New Year by enjoying some delicious and traditional Asian recipes using watercress.
This holiday, introducing 2023 as The Year of the Rabbit and celebrated by more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar. Traditional to many east Asian countries, including China, South Korea, and Vietnam, the lunar year is the time it takes to complete 12 full cycles of the moon.
The multi-day celebration is filled with events, family gatherings, feasts, and of course, red, which represents good luck. The foundation of the holiday revolves around the injunction of fortune into the coming year while safeguarding against misfortunes.
You can participate in some of these traditions by preparing Asian cuisine with friends and family. A few of our favorite dishes include a popular southern Chinese entree called a Hot Pot. Learn about its rich tradition and how to prepare this main dish with B&W’s help.
Dumplings have a longstanding tie to the Chinese New Year. Legend says that dumplings are shaped like ears because of the goddess Nǚwā (女娲), the goddess of fertility and marriage.
Nǚwā created humans from yellow clay but realized their ears would freeze off in the winter. To settle this problem, Nǚwā sewed the ears in place, tying the end of the thread to the human’s mouth. Later, to show their appreciation to Nǚwā, people formed dough in the shape of ears and filled them with meat and vegetables instead of thread.
Try our Watercress and Pork Potstickers or Dumplings and celebrate one of the oldest traditions.
